Kindergarten  Times

September 2020

Dear Parents,

We are pleased to take this opportunity to meet you and welcome your child into our class.  This is your first edition of the Kindergarten Times.  It is a monthly publication designed to keep you up to date on all the activities we will be working on in kindergarten.  This is an exciting year and we want it to be a positive experience for your child.  A successful year will depend on developing and maintaining a strong home-school connection.  We look forward to building that connection in the months to come.  It has been a pleasure to meet many of you during the kindergarten orientation.

Communication - We will be sending home a monthly newsletter that will inform you of our weekly themes, and other special occasions.   It is most important that your child be prepared for each day of class.  We are pleased that most of the boys and girls in our class have  all the necessary supplies.  Thank you for being committed to having your child prepared for a successful year!

Snack - This year we ask that your child has a snack such as a bag of pretzels, goldfish or graham crackers.   We do not have the time during our busy morning Language Arts activities to stop and eat a large snack.  We will plan for a snack break  during our afternoon time ( 2:00 pm.)  Please make sure your child has a water bottle near them to hydrate during our live zoom and small group zooms.

Lunch -
I encourage you to have a packed lunch each day of virtual school.  Treat this as an actual school event.  Support your child in packing a healthy lunch that they can independently open and close all the containers.  We want to foster independence
at this time.  This will help parents maintain a schedule for everyone.

Absences -
In case of an absence, you will need to email Mrs. Rodgers  explaining the absence.  For any missed assignments you have two days to complete the work and return it to school. Most of our work we do in kindergarten is active learning.  By active we mean work completed together in class, so it is difficult to create an assignment to send home, however, each of our "LIVE" zooms will be recorded and you will have the ability to replay the lesson so that your child is caught up on his or her work.

Discipline - Tyler Elementary does have a school wide discipline in place and all the information has come home for you to read and discuss with your child. We feel that it is very important to create an atmosphere that is conducive to learning.

Birthdays - We will celebrate each students birthday "virtually."  We will send home a note to families outlining how we will celebrate in this formate.

Star of the Week - Beginning the first week of October we will select a child to be our “Star of the Week”.  This is a very special honor that every child will enjoy at some point during the year.  We will send home a letter letting you know what special activities we will be doing with the “Star of the Week”

Show-n-Tell/Secret in the Sack -   A special activity that we will enjoy this year is “show and tell”.  But as things go in kindergarten, we change things in order to make life interesting.  We have a “secret in the sack” time.  As the name implies, something is placed in a sack and brought to "virtual" school with three clues provided.  These clues might give the color or the shape of the object.  The idea is to engage the children in conversation and speaking in front of the whole class.  This helps each child work on their communications skills.  Your job will be to check the “secret in the sack” calendar and find out when your child is scheduled.  On that day help your child prepare a sack at home with an item that they can carry with them and three clues tucked inside the bag.

We know this is a lot of information to go through but it will help our year in kindergarten be a successful one.  We are committed to making your child’s experience a successful one.  We look forward to meeting and working with you.
