Spanish Language Program
Instructor: Sra. Anna Grieco

Mañana is spring! A couple of late snow days, along with Daylight Saving Time, threw us a bit off schedule last week. However, we are still on track to finish our units on pets/animals, clothing, and self and family descriptions by the end of this quarter! After Spring Break, all classes will have a short culture unit while SOL testing is in progress, and then we will explore classroom/school words, schedules, and community. I will emphasize practice, practice, practice during the final months of school! I have also posted Vocabulary Lists,
by grade, for students to practice at home. To access the lists, please scroll to the bottom of the page, and download the appropriate class list. Enjoy la primavera, everyone!

Parents and guardians, you should be receiving a Spanish packet in your child's Wednesday folder this week! There is a letter with a brief summary of our first semester, and a vocabulary list which you can use to practice with your child. Every opportunity to practice a language is valuable. I also attached samples of each students' work from last semester. Please let me know if you did not receive this, or if you would like another copy of the vocabulary list. I will be posting individual class vocabulary lists on the website within the next week!

¡Feliz Año 2017! Just a few weeks until we start our second semester! I'm excited to present many fun topics in the next few months, now that we have worked on basic Spanish vocabulary. All K-5 students will be learning about animals/pets, classroom schedules and vocabulary, shapes, and describing themselves and family members. Grades 4 and 5 will be learning about community, places we live, how to tell time, and if time allows, we will "travel" to Spanish speaking countries! More details to follow.....

¡Ya es diciembre! And we are wrapping up our Food and Family unit in most classes. We learned about Día de Acción de Gracias, and used that as an introduction to meals and food. This week the upper grades (3-5) learned about meals in Spain, and everyone wished the cafeteria would serve churros y chocolate! Please encourage your children to practice over the holidays; we have learned and reviewed vocabulary for days, dates, weather, colors, numbers, family and food in ALL K-5 classes.
The success of the World Language Specialty Program depends on interest and enrollment from our community. If you know any families that would be interested in having their students transfer to Tyler ES to participate in the program, please contact me as soon as possible. We will be holding an information session at the school on January 5th at 6:00pm.
¡Felices Fiestas de Invierno to everyone!

Where does the tiempo go? Our first quarter is wrapping up this week! Kindergarten students continue to amaze me with their enthusiasm. They have learned several songs in Spanish, and love to play "Simon Dice" (Simon Says). Grades 3-5 just finished a cultural unit on the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos. All grades will begin the Food and Family unit this week, which will take us through the end of the calendar year. Your comments and questions are always welcome, so please do not hesitate to contact me!

As we begin our fourth week of rotations through Spanish class, I am proud to say that Kindergarten has mastered greetings, several movement commands, and we are working on days of the week and numbers. Grades 1-3 remembered their greetings, days of the week and numbers, so we are working on other calendar concepts. Grades 4-5 reviewed calendar concepts and will be learning about seasons, and what sports and activities they like to do (likes and dislikes).
Hispanic Heritage Month started last week, so we are discussing notable persons of Hispanic heritage. Stay tuned for news on our Dia de los Muertos cultural celebration for Grade 3-5 students!
Dear Tyler Families,
¡Saludos! I am delighted for the opportunity to teach Spanish at
Tyler ES this year. As the daughter of a US diplomat stationed
in South America, I learned Spanish at an early age. I have
taught Spanish at elementary and middle school levels, as well
as conversational Spanish for adults at a community college.
I look forward to sharing my cultural and travel experiences
with Tyler students!
Research shows that acquiring a second language at an early age has positive effects on intellectual growth and learning capacity. I believe that familiarity with other cultures and languages encourages students to become enthusiastic participants in our global community. You can help your child learn Spanish by reviewing and practicing vocabulary at home, and whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Our Kindergarten students will be introduced to Spanish with basic vocabulary and phrases used for greetings, family, time, weather/calendar, colors, numbers, travel, community, and much more! Our Grade 1-5 students will continue to expand vocabulary and cultural themes learned in previous years. The Encore team will be using Dojo Points as a behavior motivation tool again this year. More information will follow!
Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about the program, or if you would like to know more about what we are doing in the classroom. I will update my online Class Page regularly, as well as sending messages home with students regarding upcoming events. I look forward to working with your children this year!
