Welcome to the Super Tomcats Robotics Team page!

The Super Tomcats Robotics Team practices every Monday and Wednesday after school from the beginning September through early June from 3:45 to 5:30.  We compete in First Lego League events and fifth graders attend one VEX IQ Challenge event each year. We work hard and are known for our Gracious Professionalism and Core Values.

Coaches: Mrs. Briceno and Mrs. Wilco

Our most frequently asked question is, "How can I join the robotics team?"
Only fourth and fifth graders are eligible for the robotics team. We have 16 team members each year, usually 8 fifth graders returning to the team from the previous year and 8 fourth graders new to the team.
The last week of May each year, applications are sent home with all third graders. The 8 new team members are chosen from those applications based on work habits, conduct, sportsmanship, and problem solving skills.

Dear Parents of Third Graders,

We at Tyler are very proud of our robotics team.  The Super Tyler Tomcats FLL Robotics Team has brought home several awards for teamwork and Core Values, and represents us with outstanding behavior and spirit wherever we go. Participation provides great opportunities for STEM learning and problem solving. Team members learn new and exciting things about the world, and they gain experience presenting their findings and solutions before judges.  They grow as collaborators and leaders.  In addition, it is fun!

There are a very limited number of spaces available to rising fourth graders on the Super Tyler Tomcats FLL Robotics Team for the 2018-2019 school year. All third graders have the opportunity to apply for a place on the team. However, only 8 students from the entire third grade will be invited to join the team.

The criterion for team membership is based on scholarship, collaborative skills and sportsmanship, ethics, reliability, persistence and problem solving skills. Obviously, an interest in applied math and science is a bonus, as well.

Here are some things for you to keep in mind:

  • This is a significant time commitment. Students will be expected to attend practice regularly from the second day of school through mid-May.

  • Practice is scheduled from dismissal to 5:30 pm Mondays and Wednesdays.

  • Team members can expect to be assigned to the position most needed by the team. This decision will be made by the coaches. During the first three months, half of the team members will be assigned to work on the required research project, and will probably not have opportunity to work with the robots until winter.

  • There are very high expectations for behavior, especially when we are at tournaments or other events. These are based on, but not limited to the FLL Core Values.

  • Students who are part of the team in fourth grade are invited to return for their fifth grade year. This allows us to learn and grow, as well as to pass along the things we learn to the next set of students.

  • At Tyler there is no cost to the family for team participation.

The student application is attached. It is due by May 24. Please send it to school to the attention of Mrs. Wilco. If you have any questions or would like to confirm receipt of the form, you may contact Mrs. Wilco at wilcobt@pwcs.edu

We look forward hearing from interested students, and we are excited about beginning another great year of robotics!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Wilco and Mrs. Briceno
